Canon PIXMA Error Code 5100 – Causes and Fixes

Error code 5100 on Canon PIXMA printers indicates a carriage or mechanical error. The print head carriage is unable to move freely, triggering this error.

Common Causes of Error 5100

• Paper jam or debris blocking the carriage path
• Ink cartridge installed incorrectly
• Dirty or damaged encoder strip
• Carriage motor failure

Fix 1: Remove Paper and Debris

1. Turn off the printer and unplug it
2. Open the front cover and top cover
3. Carefully inspect the paper path and carriage area
4. Remove any jammed paper, torn pieces, or foreign objects
5. Move the carriage manually to check for obstructions
6. Close covers, plug in, and power on

Fix 2: Reseat the Ink Cartridges

1. Open the printer lid
2. Remove each ink cartridge
3. Reinsert them firmly until you hear a click
4. Close the lid and try printing

Fix 3: Clean the Encoder Strip

The encoder strip is a thin transparent strip running horizontally across the carriage path. Dust or ink on it causes error 5100.

1. Dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water
2. Gently wipe the encoder strip from left to right
3. Let it dry completely before powering on

Fix 4: Reset the Printer

1. With the printer on, hold the Stop/Reset button for 10 seconds
2. Release and wait for the printer to restart
3. Try printing again

Fix 5: Update Printer Firmware
